Re-imagining teaching

Progressive pedagogies in experimental schools, 1894 to 1932

About

The early decades of the 20th century saw rich examples of schools where teachers experimented with progressive pedagogies, developing new ways to respond to the bifurcated interest that shapes school practices and policies even today: preparing students for both citizenship and employment. Traditional teaching strategies have often fallen short of satisfying this dual outcome for students, but we still lack a broad and deep understanding of how innovative teaching strategies can change more traditional approaches, to transform learning outcomes. Re-imagining Teaching turns to historical examples to investigate these concerns, by exploring teachers’ practices and their preparation for working in new ways in five innovative schools, on three different continents.
